Speaker Profile: Butch Bacani
At UN Environment, Butch Bacani leads the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI), the largest collaborative initiative between the UN and the insurance industry. Endorsed by the UN Secretary-General and insurance CEOs, the PSI serves as a global framework to address environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities, and a global initiative to strengthen the insurance industry’s contribution to building resilient, inclusive and sustainable communities and economies. Butch leads activities supporting the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Paris Agreement on Climate Change, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, and UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. He led the creation of the largest collaboration between the insurance industry and cities, and co-led the creation of the Sustainable Insurance Forum for Supervisors. Butch led the global process that produced the PSI in 2012, and UN Environment’s insurance and investment programmes from 2006-10, including its activities with the UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment. Butch has authored or contributed to pioneering studies, including the first sustainable insurance study, first global sustainability survey of the insurance industry, first global survey of cities, SMEs, climate risks and the insurance industry, statements and research on climate change, disaster risk management, health risks and green finance by insurers, investors and financial regulators, and a legal roadmap on fiduciary duty and responsible investment.
